There has been an ongoing debate over the use of the term master bedroom, have you heard of it? There are those who believe that the use of the term master bedroom is indicative of a slave somewhere else inside the house. This reeks of racial discrimination- one that no one is fond of. So, in order to be politically right, you have to use the term owner’s bedroom now. And for those who are looking for the right styles for this part of their home, they will now need to search for owner’s bedroom designs.
The Owner’s Bedroom History
This part of a house usually has an huge bathroom and a walk-in closet for the mistress or the man of the house. Yet this is a contemporary connotation to this term since the American real estate industry only began to embrace this element about 25 or so years ago.
This is also called the master suite (forgive the inclusion of the word master in there yet again) which practically sprung during the 80s.
For a lot of people, the 18th and 19th century homes were all utilitarian. Only the rich could afford numerous bedrooms as well as sitting rooms. Though this is the case, most lower to middle class Americans preferred to sleep all together in one room – more so during the coldest winter seasons. Of course, this is because they weren’t as lucky as their rich counterparts with regard to the number of rooms and furnaces installed therein.
Owner’s Bedroom Design Elements
When picking the right hues for the owner’s bedroom, always remember that the predominant color inside such a room should be the one where you are to wake up to. Do not forget, though, that the bedroom is there primarily for relaxation so you must find a color that evokes feelings of serenity while not coming across as boring.
You can opt for the multicolor theme where block-colored furniture can be accentuated with colorful walls. Do say no to white inside the bedroom – this will only make the room look like an antiseptic hospital. You can choose off white colors and other such hues, though. Choose this as a secondary color to stronger primary hues such as red, purple or orange.
Next to the wall or flooring colors, it is time to shop for the furniture. Of course, the star of the room should be your bed. Your selection of bed will dictate the rest of the design elements.
Be sure to pick a bed that is comfortable for you as well as for your partner. Remember that this is where you will literally relax so it has to be inviting and cozy. You also need to decide whether you would prefer a high bed (Victorian style) or a low one (Futon). Be sure to list down your preferences so that you can discuss this with the furniture dealer as you shop.
Apart from the bed, you must also shop for other important bedroom furniture such as the bedside tables, the wardrobe (in the absence of an adjacent walk-in closet), a dresser (preferably one that has a mirror), and a loveseat. For a more contemporary look, you can have wicker furniture inside your bedroom.
Lighting is also an important element to consider. Keep in mind that you are supposed to sleep inside the bedroom but this should not keep you from allowing sunlight to flood the room during the morning. To achieve this, you can install heavy drapes that can be drawn during the evenings. Curtains can also be an aesthetic element inside this private room in your home. Do you like these owner’s bedroom designs? It won’t hurt for you to take more time to research some more styles that you could consider for your room.
